Career Notes:

Jahmyr Gibbs earned his football stripes while attending the high school that shares the namesake of his hometown Dalton, Georgia. Gibbs was a talented multi-sport athlete as a youngster, finding success in basketball, baseball, and football during his formative years. The do-it-all dynamic youngster’s high school stats would become that of Georgia state legend by the time he finished his tenure.

After turning his primary focus to football in his sophomore year, Gibbs was awarded a starting job, rushing for 897 yards and 11 touchdowns on 134 rushing attempts (6.7 YPC).

National recruits began to take notice during the rising star’s junior year after he secured 22 total touchdowns, rushing for 1431 yards on 163 carries (8.8 YPC).

As a high school senior Gibbs erupted for 2554 rushing yards, averaging 11.0 yards per carry on just 233 rushing attempts. He found the endzone a mind-boggling 40 times that season, finishing his high school career with a state-record 4882 rushing yards and 70 touchdowns.

Despite posting otherworldly stats in his final season, Gibbs fell just shy of the coveted 5-star recruit rating, earning a 4-star rating from 24/7 Sports and Espn as the fourth-ranked running back and 44th-ranked player overall in the nation.

Gibbs would ultimately decide to stay close to home, committing to Georgia Tech after receiving offers from high-profile schools including Alabama, the program in which he would ultimately end his collegiate career.

Accolades:

  • 5-Star Recruit (24/7 Sports)

  • Mr. Georgia Award (2019)

  • Sports Illustrated All-American (2019)

  • Second Team All-American (2021)

  • First-Team All-ACC (2021)

  • Named a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award (2022)

  • Doak Walker Award's National RB of the Week after performance against Arkansas (Career high 206 yards rushing on 18 carries tying Najee Harris’s record for most rushing yards by an Alabama RB in a single game)

  • Semifinalist for the Maxwell Award

  • Member of the ACC Honor Roll

  • Dixie Howell Award

Past Production/Collegiate Career:

As a true freshman at Georgia Tech, Gibbs handled 86 carries for 460 yards (5.4 YPC) and 4 touchdowns. The versatile back did not shy away from flashing his receiving prowess as he hauled in 24 passes for 303 yards (12.6 YPR) and 3 touchdowns in only seven games played. Gibbs was also named an All-ACC kick returner averaging 25.6 yards per return in 2020.

The following season, in what would be his final at Georgia Tech, Gibbs cemented himself as an analytical per-touch darling, rushing for 746 yards on 143 carries (5.2 YPC) while adding 35 receptions for 465 receiving yards (13.3 YPR), totaling 1211 scrimmage yards and six total touchdowns on 178 touches (6.8 YPT) he rushed 143 times for 746 yards alongside 4 rushing touchdowns. He earned third-team All-ACC honors, recognizing his stellar sophomore season as one of the best in the conference.

During his two years at Georgia Tech, Gibbs had recorded a 91.5 PFF receiving grade, the highest of any running back in the history of PFF’s College Football Database. Despite finding success in the ACC, Gibbs would enter the transfer portal, ultimately deciding on Alabama as his final destination.

In his lone season at Alabama as a Junior, Gibbs solidified himself as an elite rusher to amplify an already proven receiving pedigree. Under Nick Saban’s tutelage the rising prospect would rush for 850 yards on 136 carries setting a career-high in both rushing yards and yards per carry (6.3 YPC). Gibbs did face some regression as a receiver in Alabama’s system, catching just 42 balls for 378 yards (9.0 YPR). Nevertheless, the junior earned second All-SEC honors as Alabama’s top running back and third-team Associated Press All-American honors, cementing his all-purpose profile as an elite college football talent.

After three stellar seasons of dual-threat production, Gibbs declared early for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Scouting Report:

NFL Draft Grade: 6.37 (Will Eventually Be Plus Starter)

Next-Gen Draft Grade: 84 (Good)

Scouting Strengths:

  • Best receiving profile of any running back in the 2023 NFL Draft.

  • Boasts a truly elite skill set as a pass-catcher, exhibiting an extensive route tree and the ability to haul in passes away from his body.

  • Deceptively strong for being only 199 lbs.

  • Top-end speed is matched by very few at the pro level. Gibbs has the ability to turn on the burners at any given notice, leaving all 11 defenders in his wake.

  • Was clocked at 22.3 MPH using GPS technology on a 73-yard touchdown.

  • Zero hesitation to burst through holes and take on defenders with his impressive agility and vision.

  • Will enter the NFL draft at merely 21 years old with plenty of tread on the tires. Has posted incredible production despite limited touches.

  • Can stretch the entire line of scrimmage with stretch plays, creating wide lanes to turn upfield.

  • Effortless strides, appearing to glide through contact whether moving laterally or vertically.

  • Boasts ridiculous catch efficiency with soft hands and deadly open-field elusiveness.

  • Beats covering linebackers with ease using both his speed and ability to control the tempo.

  • Excellent kick/punt returner.

Scouting Weaknesses:

  • Not a great pass blocker, limiting his availability in certain 3rd down situations.

  • Lack the size for a three-down workhorse.

  • Will sometimes make some baffling decisions when running between the tackles.

  • Makes up for the lack of contact balance with incredible elusiveness but will likely be muscled around at the pro level.

Future NFL/Fantasy Outlook:

Gibbs is a true “Konami Code” running back with immense receiving upside. He possesses an elite collegiate career target share of 13.1% target share, generating a 118.2 QB Rating when targeted with an 84.0% catch rating. He has recorded 103 career receptions for 1212 yards and 8 receiving touchdowns across three seasons with Georgia Tech (2) and Alabama (1). Gibbs has also flashed the potential to be a functional wideout rather than running all of his routes from behind the line of scrimmage. The promising prospect ran 10.8% of his routes from the slot and 15.1% of his routes out wide as a receiver, leading all eligible running backs in both categories. Gibbs averaged 1.6 YPRR, forced 104 missed tackles, and boasts a 115.7 elusive rating from PFF. He has created 1292 yards after contact with 3.6 yards after contact on rush attempts and 4.17 yards after contact per touch. All of this is to say that the former Georgia Tech and Alabama product is the most versatile dual-threat running back in his class. For my money, Gibbs is the only running back prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft class with a career range of outcomes that could challenge Bijan Robinson as the overall RB1 in Dynasty leagues before the pages close on their storied careers.
