NFL Week 9 Roundup

Welcome back to the Weekly Roundup. As always, we will be highlighting this past week’s injury report, top performers, underperformers, and surprise producers. There was no shortage of stunning storylines during Week 9 of the 2023 NFL Season, so let’s recap the action.

INJURY ROUNDUP

Justin Fields (CHI) - Hand/Thumb

  • Justin Fields remains sidelined with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand. Tyson Bagent has received the start over the past three weeks and is expected to be the continued starter if Fields is unable to go. Bagent’s newfound rushing upside makes him a serviceable streamer in Superflex formats.

Matthew Stafford (LAR) - Hand/Thumb

  • In Week 8 Matthew Stafford appeared to injure his throwing hand after incidental contact on one of his pass attempts but entered back into the game shortly thereafter. Stafford then re-injured said hand on a trick play that saw the quarterback make an impressive diving reception into the endzone for six points. The veteran quarterback sat out Week 9 but is expected to make a return to action soon. Brett Rypien will serve as the team’s backup if Stafford misses more time.

Daniel Jones (NYG) - Knee

  • Daniel Jones missed three consecutive games with a neck injury, only to return and suffer a season-ending ACL tear in Week 9. Tyrod Taylor would be the usual backup but he is also dealing with injuries.

Tyrod Taylor (NYG) - Ribs

  • Tyrod Taylor was rushed to the hospital in Week 8 following a big hit during the Giants overtime loss to the Jets. Taylor will be the likely starter if he can recover in time for the Giants' next game but is considered “week-to-week” according to the team’s medical staff.

Jaylen Waddle (MIA) - Knee

  • Jaylen Waddle was forced to exit the game early in the first quarter. The star wideout should be considered questionable to play in Week 10 until further designations arise.

Kendrick Bourne (NE) - Knee

  • Kendrick Bourne will miss the remainder of the 2023 season as he rehabs from an ACL tear suffered in Week 8. Bourne was enjoying a career-best year before his unfortunate injury. The Patriots' lack of depth at the wide receiver position has been vastly apparent all year. The loss of Bourne thins out an already weak roster.

Ryan Tannehill (TEN) - Ankle

  • Ryan Tannehill has been sidelined since Week 8 with a high ankle sprain. Will Levis will continue to act as the starter in Tannehill’s stead and may have already won himself the starting role upon the veteran’s return.

Treylon Burks (TEN) - Head/Concussion

  • Treylon Burks came crashing down hard on the sidelines after attacking a contested ball in the Titans' loss to the Steelers on Thursday Night Football. Burks would need medical assistance to exit the field but was responsive with full movement of his extremities en route to the hospital.

Josh Palmer (LAC) - Knee

  • Josh Palmer was listed as questionable throughout the week leading up to the Chargers Week 8 game against the Bears. Palmer was able to suit up but reaggravated said injury early in the first quarter. The veteran wideout missed Week 9, eventually landing on injured reserve for the next four games.

Kyler Murray (ARI) - Knee

  • Kyler Murray has officially been removed from the injured reserve list, opening his 21-day practice window for the Cardinals. The star quarterback has one more week before the team must activate him to the 53-man roster. If he has not progressed enough in his recovery to do so, Murray would be forced to miss the remainder of the season with his second stint on injured reserve. Rookie quarterback Clayton Tune will act as the starter now that Joshua Dobbs has been shipped to Minnesota to supplement the loss of Kirk Cousins.

Zach Ertz (ARI) - Quad

  • The Cardinals placed Zach Ertz on injured reserve in Week 8, leaving the veteran unavailable until Week 12 at the earliest. Trey McBride should continue to feast as the team’s top weapon at the position.

Michael Wilson (ARI) - Shoulder

  • Rookie wideout Michael Wilson was held out of the Cardinals' final practice before their Week 9 shutout loss to the Browns. Wilson’s status should be monitored leading into Week 10, especially if Murray gets the starting nod.

Emari Demercado (ARI) - Toe

  • The Cardinals rising rookie running back missed the opportunity to start in his fourth consecutive game as he recovers from a turf toe injury.

Curtis Samuel (WAS) - Toe

  • Curtis Samuel finds himself on the injury report with a toe injury following the Commanders' loss to the Eagles in Week 8. Samuel missed Week 9 and is unlikely to play in Week 10 as the team reportedly needs to “re-evaluate” the injury.

Dawson Knox (BUF) - Wrist

  • The Bills tight end was placed on injured reserve following further evaluations of a wrist injury suffered in Week 7. Knox’s absence opened up the path for consistent week-winning from rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid – a trend that should continue until Week 11, at the earliest.

Cam Akers (MIN) - Achilles

  • The Vikings fear the worst for Cam Akers as the young running back has reportedly suffered his second Achilles tear of his career. Akers was recently acquired from the Vikings via a mid-season trade from the Rams in an attempt to bolster a backfield led by Alexander Mattison. Mattison will be leaned on heavily now that the Vikings are without their starting quarterback or competent running back depth.

K.J. Osborn (MIN) - Head/Concussion

  • K.J. Osborn was carted off the field after absorbing a brutal collision that left the Vikings wide receiver unconscious.

Jaren Hall (MIN) - Head/Concussion

  • The Vikings' injury woes worsened in their win over the Falcons as Week 9 starter Jaren Hall was forced to leave the game with a concussion, paving the way for emergency starter and newly acquired Josh Dobbs to helm the offense. Dobbs will be the unquestioned starter moving forward, regardless of Hall’s health status.

Josh Downs (IND) - Knee

  • Josh Downs exited early in the Colts' Week 9 win over the Panthers and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest. The team will evaluate Downs’ injury in the early portions of Week 10’s practice schedule but the rookie receiver may be in jeopardy of missing his first NFL game.

Dallas Goedert (PHI) - Forearm

  • Dallas Goedert left the Eagles Week 9 Divisional battle against the Cowboys after suffering an apparent arm injury. Goedert received X-rays in the locker room and was seen favoring his arm on the sidelines for the remainder of the contest.

WEEKLY WEIGH-IN

Arizona Cardinals: The Art of Blatantly Tanking

  • The Cardinals activated Kyler Murray off injured reserve, quickly trading away replacement starting quarterback Josh Dobbs shortly thereafter.

  • Rookie quarterback Clayton Tune was named the starter in Dobbs' stead as Murray has yet to be elevated to the 53-man roster.

  • The team has just one more week to name Murray the starter before league rules state that they must place him on season-ending injured reserve.

  • In Tune’s first start of his career, he completed 11/20 attempts for just 58 yards and two interceptions, mounting zero scoring drives as the Cardinals were shut out by a top-tier Browns defense.

  • More than half of the Cardinals’ offensive plays netted zero (or negative) yards.

Atlanta Falcons: Arthur Smith - A Smoldering Dumpster Fire of Incompetence

  • Desmond Ridder was benched in the second half of the Falcons Week 8 loss to the Titans, paving the way for veteran journeyman Taylor Heinecke to helm the offense.

  • Heinecke started for Ridder in Week 9 but fared no better than the second-year signal caller as the Falcons' offensive successes remain hindered by the laughable incompetence and unearned arrogance of head coach Arthur Smith.

  • Tyler Allgeier had negative (-)13 yards on his first five touches and was still handed more rushing opportunities than Bijan Robinson.

  • Jonnu Smith and Khadarel Hodge (WHO!?!?) led the team with six targets each while Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson saw just four targets apiece.

Baltimore Ravens: Division Dominance

  • The Ravens sit atop the the AFC North with a 7-2 record winning four in a row with their most recent beat down of the Seahawks in Week 9.

  • The Ravens have allowed just 33 combined points in their last three contests.

  • Undrafted rookie running back Keaton Mitchell made himself a household name amongst fantasy football fans, rushing for 138 yards and one touchdown on nine attempts, including a long 60-yard scamper and a 40-yard dash to the endzone.

  • Gus Edwards pounded in two more touchdowns on the ground, lifting his totals to five scores in the last two games.

  • Tyler Huntley completed the team’s only touchdown pass, connecting with Odell Beckham Jr for the veteran’s first score of the season while Jackson enjoyed some extra rest on the sidelines.

  • Per NFL.Com, “The Ravens' offense rushed for 298 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries for a season-high +157 rushing yards over expected in Week 9.”

  • The Ravens are 3-0 against teams with a winning record and have not trailed once this season against teams over .500.

Buffalo Bills: Down Low, Too Slow

  • The Bills were unable to overcome their slow start in Week 9, losing a close 24-18 game against the Bengals.

  • Bill Belichick may have unknowingly shared the cheat code to beat Josh Allen in Week 7.

  • In that contest, the Patriots allowed Allen the longest time to throw in any game this season. When the Patriots allowed Allen more than 2.5s to throw, he completed 16/30 attempts with one interception. When the Patriots blitzed Allen with less than 2.5s to throw he completed 11/11 attempts with two touchdowns.

  • In Week 9 the Bengals defense blitzed on just 7.0% of Allen’s dropbacks, the team’s second-lowest rate in a game over the last six seasons. Allen finished completing 26/38 pass attempts for 258 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

  • Dalton Kincaid continues to make his presence felt in the absence of Dawson Knox. The Bills first-round rookie tight end saw a team-high 11 targets, catching 10 for 81 yards.

  • Khalil Shakir has become a fixture in the offense as the team moves away from 2-TE sets in favor of 11 personnel (3 WR). Shakir saw four targets, catching all four for 57 yards.

Carolina Panthers: Young and Restless

  • The Panthers' offensive woes continued in Week 9 as Bryce Young became just the second rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw two pick-sixes in the same game and the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw two pick-sixes to the same player in the same game. Fortunately, Andrew Luck is the only other quarterback to hold the formerly mentioned record and his career turned out just fine.

  • Unfortunately, Young also became the fourth quarterback in Panthers history to throw multiple pick-sixes in a game, joining Chris Weinke (2001), Jake Delhomme (2005), and Brian St. Pierre (2010).

Chicago Bears: Barren Bears

  • Tyson Bagent received another start under center for the injured Justin Fields, this time coughing up four turnovers en route to a loss to the Saints.

  • Bagent had completed 15/19 pass attempts with one touchdown and one interception through three quarters before throwing two more picks and losing a fumble in the fourth quarter.

  • Cole Kmet has produced several week-winning performances this season, regardless of who is under center for the team. Kmet followed up a stunning Week 8 with a stellar Week 9 outing, catching six of eight targets for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Darnelly Mooney surprisingly led the team with five receptions and 82 yards while D.J. Moore drew shadow coverage from All-Pro cornerback Marshon Lattimore.

Cincinnati Bengals: Jungle Joe Stays Hot

  • Since Week 5, the Bengals have led the NFL with a 4-0 record while Joe Burrow tops all quarterbacks with a 75.8% completion rating, ten passing touchdowns, and a 111.2 passer rating.

  • Burrow chucked for 348 yards and two touchdowns on 31/44 attempts. The star quarterback surprisingly found his source of scoring via tight ends Irv Smith and Drew Sample for both players' first touchdown of the 2023 season.

Cleveland Browns: Dawg Pound Beatdown

  • The Browns' defense has rightfully earned their top-tier label, dominating first-time starter Clayton Tune and the Cardinals in Week 9.

  • Week 9 marked the Browns' first shutout win in over 15 years. The team also allowed just 58 yards allowed, tying the third-fewest total yards given up in a game in Browns' franchise history.

  • The Browns' tune-up game (pun intended) came just in time against a team intent on losing as Deshaun Watson made his return to the starting lineup.

  • Watson completed 19/30 attempts for 219 and two touchdowns with no interceptions, posting one of his more efficient outings of the season.

Dallas Cowboys: Failing to Convert

  • The Cowboys' offense was statistically great in Week 9, posting 406 total yards (333 Passing/73 Rushing) and outpacing the Eagles in all offensive categories, save for points scored of course.

  • Several failed conversions on third down, fourth down, and in the red zone cost the Cowboys a divisional win against the Eagles.

  • Dak Prescott completed 29/44 attempts for 374 yards with three touchdowns, connecting with Jake Ferguson, Kevonte Turpin, and Jalen Tolbert for his scores.

  • CeeDee Lamb had another career outing in Week 9 after posting the best game of his career in Week 8. Lamb caught 11 balls for 191 yards on a team-high 16 targets but failed to score on the final play of the game, ultimately costing the Cowboys a victory.

Denver Broncos: *BYE WEEK*

Detroit Lions: *BYE WEEK*

Green Bay Packers: Jones Stands Alone As Top Producer

  • After starting the season playing mistake-free football, Jordan Love has become a laughingstock of inefficiency and careless quarterbacking.

  • The Packers signal-caller has thrown eight interceptions in his last six outings after making it through his first three games with zero turnovers.

  • Week 9 marked the first game that Love has not committed a turnover since Week 3, although he did fumble once.

  • Love completed 20/25 attempts for 228 yards with one touchdown, recording a season-high +6.5% Completion Percentage Over Expectation.

  • Aaron Jones handled a workhorse opportunity share in Week 9, touting 20 carries for 72 yards and one touchdown while catching four of his team-high six targets for 26 yards.

  • Jones’ rushing touchdown marked the 63rd score of his Packers career, surpassing Donald Driver and Paul Hornung for the seventh spot on the all-time franchise touchdown list.

Houston Texans: Stroud Sets New Single-Game Rookie Standard

  • C.J. Stroud has been rewriting NFL History books with his historic record-setting rookie pace all season. Week 9 marked a new height for the superstar quarterback, setting an NFL rookie record with 470 passing yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions while completing 30/42 attempts.

  • Stroud became the only quarterback in Texans franchise history to throw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers.

  • The rookie’s week nine performance marks the single highest quarterback grade of the 2023 season via NextGen Statistics and Pro Football Focus.

  • Rookie receiver Nathaniel “Tank” Dell helped propel Stroud to new historic heights in Week 9, collecting six of 11 targets for 114 yards and two touchdowns, marking the single-highest combined yardage total of a rookie quarterback and rookie wide receiver in NFL history.

  • Noah Brown excelled in an increased role, catching six of six targets for a perfect 100.0% catcher rating with 153 yards and one touchdown.

  • Dalton Schultz was an unstoppable force of tight end fantasy production, tying Dell with a team-high 11 targets, catching 10 for 130 yards and one touchdown.

  • Nico Collins broke his cold streak with three catches for 54 yards and one touchdown but remained well behind his teammates considering the onslaught of offensive production the Texans put up in the second half of Week 9.

Indianapolis Colts: One Moore Time (x2)

  • Kenny Moore II accounted for 12 of the Colts' total 27 points, taking not one but two pick-sixes to the house against the Panthers.

  • Moore II became the first player in the Colts' illustrious history to score two defensive touchdowns in the same game.

  • The Colts defense forced rookie Bryce Young into three interceptions, sealing the game with a Segun Olubi pick late in the fourth quarter.

  • Gardner Minshew averaged a menial 4.9 yards per attempt, completing 17/26 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown.

  • Jonathan Taylor saw significantly more work than Zack Moss for the first time this season, handling 18 rush attempts for 47 yards with five targets, catching all five for 22 yards and one touchdown.

  • Comparatively, Moss had seven rush attempts for 26 yards while earning zero targets.

  • Josh Downs was forced to exit the game with a knee injury after his lone catch and target for 10 yards.

  • Michael Pittman stepped up in Downs' stead but was less effective with a lower depth of target than his rookie teammate has been as of late.

  • Pittman saw a team-high eight targets, catching all of them for 64 yards.

Jacksonville Jaguars: *BYE WEEK*

Kansas City Chiefs: Internationally Renowned Defense

  • Travis Kelce was surprisingly stymied in the Chiefs' Week 9 win over the Dolphins. The veteran tight end caught just three passes for 14 yards.

  • Those 14 yards were all Kelce needed to surpass Hall of Fame legend Tony Gonzales as the all-time receiving yards leader in Chiefs history.

  • Kelce entered the contest with 10,927 receiving yards in his career, just 13 yards behind Gonzalaz’s record.

  • The Chiefs' defense stepped up in a big way to hold the Dolphins' top-ranked offense to just 14 points and Tyreek Hill to just 68 yards in the wideouts revenge against his former team.

  • Bryan Cook scored on a fumble recovery/lateral, recording a ball-carrier speed of 21.31 MPH – the fastest of any Chiefs player since Tyreek Hill departed.

Las Vegas Raiders: Raiders Reinvigorated

  • The Raiders franchise appeared reinvigorated in Week 9 after firing head coach Josh McDaniel and general manager Dave Ziegler after a horrendous start to the 2023 season.

  • The Raiders celebrated the departure with a 30-6 beatdown of an injury-riddled Giants squad.

  • Interim head coach Antonio Pierce had the team up 24-0 at the half, allowing just six total points as his defense showed up and showed out in his first game as an NFL head coach.

  • Aiden O’Connell looked much sharper in his second start, playing for Jimmy Garoppolo who was benched following a horrendous showing in Week 8.

  • The Raiders rookie quarterback played turnover-free football, completing 16/25 attempts for 209 yards.

  • Josh Jacobs had a season-best rushing performance, rushing for two touchdowns and 98 yards on 26 carries.

Los Angeles Chargers: *Updated Following Monday Night Football*

Los Angeles Rams: Rams Get Routed, Kupp and Nacua Whither with Rypien

  • The Rams were dominated at every facet, on every down, in every position against the Packers' defense in Week 9 with Brett Rypien under center.

  • Rypien completed just 13/28 attempts for 130 yards with two turnovers (1 Interception, 1 Fumble Lost).

  • Cooper Kupp (2 REC/48 YDS) and Puka Nacua (3 REC/32 YDS) were held to ineffective outings as Rypien diminished the target value of every pass attempt.

  • Royce Freeman (12 RSH/32 YDS) and Darrell Henderson (10 RSH/19 YDS) combined for a mere 51 yards on 22 attempts (2.3 YPC).

Miami Dolphins: International Speed Limit

  • The Dolphins entered Week 9 averaging a league-high 18.9 points in the first half of games.

  • The Chiefs' defense was able to hold the Dolphins to zero points in the first two frames of their Week 9 International Series matchup.

  • The Dolphins are now 0-3 against teams with records above .500.

  • Tyreek Hill was pacing toward the single-season receiving yard record but fell well below his needed averages with just 68 yards against his former team.

Minnesota Vikings: State of Emergency QB

  • Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles in the Vikings win over the Packers in Week 8, effectively ending the veteran’s 2023 season while putting the remainder of his career in question as well.

  • The team immediately traded for Cardinals’ journeyman Josh Dobbs to replace their veteran signal-caller but elected to start rookie quarterback Jaren Hall in Week 9 with Dobbs having just four days to learn the playbook.

  • Hall was forced to exit with a concussion, leaving the Vikings with no other option other than to call on Dobbs as their emergency quarterback.

  • The castaway quarterback carefully dissected the Falcons' defense, throwing for two touchdowns on 20/30 attempts for 158 yards while leading the team with 66 rushing yards with his third touchdown on just seven rushing attempts.

  • Dobbs became the first quarterback in NFL history to post three touchdowns in consecutive starts for two different franchises in the same season.

  • T.J. Hockenson saw a team-high 12 targets, catching seven for 69 yards.

  • Devastating news followed the Vikings victory as running back Cam Akers has reportedly suffered the second Achilles tear of his young career, effectively ending his 2023 season and putting his NFL tenure in serious question.

New England Patriots: The Patriots (Losing) Way

  • The Patriots have fallen back to their losing ways, dropping four of their last five games – most recently falling to the 4-5 Commanders in a narrow 20-17 defeat.

  • The Patriots' 2-7 record marks the worst nine-game stretch since 2000, which just so happened to be Bill Belichick’s first season as the head coach of the team.

  • Demario Douglas, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Hunter Henry all earned seven targets as the team’s top pass-catchers with Kendrick Bourne on the sidelines.

  • Jalen Reagor saw an unnecessary six targets for no explainable reason as he has no deserving right to be on an NFL field. Reagor caught one pass for 11 yards.

New Orleans Saints: King of the Hill

  • The Saints' defense forced five turnovers against the Bears, providing the offense with plenty of scoring chances against a bottom-feeding defensive matchup.

  • Unfortunately, the Saints were only able to levy 24 points out of all their extra possessions but thankfully still walked away with a win.

  • Now at 5-4, the Saints sit atop an extremely weak NFC South as division leaders.

  • Taysom Hill led the Saints with 52 rush yards, posting one passing touchdown and one receiving touchdown in Week 9. The Saints' do-it-all gadget man is one of just six players in NFL history to lead their team in rushing yards while also posting at least one passing touchdown and one receiving touchdown in the same game (Christian McCaffrey, Cam Newton, Josh Allen, LaDainian Tomlinson x2, and Curtis Martin).

New York Giants: Net Negatives

  • The Giants' injury reports on offense are longer than your Grandma’s grocery list before Thanksgiving.

  • Darren Waller and Daniel Jones have both been placed on injured reserve with Jones expected to miss the remainder of the 2023 season with an ACL tear.

  • Tommy DeVito absorbed six sacks, leading zero touchdown drives with back-to-back interceptions on his first two possessions of the game.

New York Jets:*Updated Following Monday Night Football*

Philadelphia Eagles: Eagles Down Division Rivals, Stay Atop NFC

  • The Eagles' defense allowed just 5.6% of the Cowboys' rushes to gain more yards than expected, per NextGen Statistics, marking the fourth-lowest rate in a game over the last three seasons. They allowed negative (-)37 rushing yards over expected in Week 9.

  • A.J. Brown’s historic run of games with 125(+) receiving yards ended in Week 9 as the star receiver hauled in seven of his team-high nine targets for 66 yards and one touchdown.

  • DeVonta Smith found relevant for the second consecutive game after a three-game cold streak. Smith hauled in his second score in as many games, catching all three of his targets for 51 yards.

  • Jalen Hurts converted three touchdown drives of 11 (or more) plays against the vaunted Cowboys defense.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Steelers Steal Win

  • The Steelers have scored fewer total points this season than every single team they have faced through nine weeks yet boast a winning record of 5-3.

  • Diontae Johnson’s return has completely snuffed the hype surrounding second-year wideout George Pickens.

  • Johnson commanded a team-high nine targets, leading the offense with seven receptions for 90 yards and one touchdown.

  • Pickens caught two passes for negative (-) one yard.

  • Jaylen Warren continues to be more effective and more efficient than Najee Harris on every touch.

  • This week, Warren saw 11 rush attempts for 88 yards with three receptions for 25 yards while Harris handled 16 carries for 69 yards with two catches for seven yards.

San Francisco 49ers: *BYE WEEK*

Seattle Seahawks: Offense Bamboozled in Battle of the Birds

  • Geno Smith and the Seahawks offense were smothered by a resounding Ravens defense, accumulating just 151 total yards (123 Passing/28 Rushing).

  • Kenneth Walker averaged just 1.8 YPC, marking the single-lowest average of his young NFL career. Walker gained just 16 yards on nine attempts.

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba continues to rise in his rookie development, leading the Seahawks offense with seven targets, six receptions, and 63 yards as the team’s only viable fantasy producer in Week 9.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Blundering Buccaneers

  • The Buccaneers have now lost four consecutive games and are 1-4 over their last five contests.

  • Rachaad White is finally emerging as a league-winning producer. The second-year running back had a career-best rushing performance, taking 20 carries for 72 yards and two rushing touchdowns while continuing to flash his elite pass-catching prowess with four receptions for 46 yards on four targets.

Tennessee Titans: Levis Levels Down, Quickly Regresses Following Historic Debut

  • Will Levis made his debut as a Titans starter in Week 8, throwing for 238 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions on 19/29 pass attempts. Levis was just the third quarterback in NFL history to begin their career with four touchdown passes, joining Marcus Mariota (2015) and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton (1961) as the only players to accomplish the lofty feat. The entire Titans offense had just three total passing touchdowns (Tannehill: 2/Henry: 1) before Week 8.

  • Week 9 presented a much different outcome for the second-round rookie. Levis was shut down by the Steelers' defense, throwing for 262 yards on 22/39 attempts with no touchdowns and one interception while absorbing four sacks.

  • Kyle Phillips needed just five targets to lead the team in receiving yardage, hauling in four passes for 68 yards.

  • DeAndre Hopkins managed just four receptions for 60 yards despite leading the team with 11 targets.

Washington Commanders: Howell Hammers in Four Scores, Commanders Fall Short

  • Sam Howell has been a surprisingly competent fantasy quarterback this season, representing a near opposite reflection of his on-field successes.

  • Howell was sacked three times in the Commanders' Week 9 win over the Patriots. The second-year quarterback also threw one interception.

  • The errant gunslinger supplemented his negatives with 325 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, and one touchdown.

  • Howell has now posted over 300 passing yards in back-to-back games, marking the first time in his short career he has surpassed the high-water mark in consecutive contests.

  • The Commanders' Week 9 win over the Patriots broke a 20-year drought of winless matchups between the franchises as the last time the Commanders had secured a win against their AFC opponents was in 2003.
