Opportunity Knocks: Week 5 Usage Report and Recap

Opportunity is king in fantasy football. Tracking player volume and snaps each season helps managers get ahead of coaching trends while making advanced moves on the trade market and waiver wires. In this recurring weekly series, we will look at all 32 teams’ most notable market shares (percentage of team output) in targets, opportunities, and rushing/receiving production. Week 5 is officially in the books and we have some stunning usage data to recap, so let’s get right to it. For the complete report of opportunity data on every single player, download the FREE Fantasy Football by Broto App.

Arizona Cardinals

  • Rondale Moore led the Cardinals in rushing yards (50) needing just three carries (13.6% Rush Share) to accomplish the feat.

Atlanta Falcons

  • Kyle Pitts (7 REC/87 YDS) and Drake London (6 REC/78 YDS) shared as the Falcons leaders in receiving production, a high water mark that has yet to be achieved by the duo during their short tenure together.

  • Bijan Robinson (14 Carries/% Rush Share) saw fewer carries than Tyler Allgeier (17 Carries/% Rush Share) but still produced more rushing yards than his teammate (Robinson: 46 YDS, Allgeier: 40 YDS).

Baltimore Ravens

  • Zay Flowers (5 REC/73 YDS) and Mark Andrews (6 REC/65 YDS) accounted for 50.0% of Lamar Jackson’s total completions in Week 5 while making up 58.5% of their quarterbacks' total passing production.

  • Flowers (11 Targets/28.9% Target Share) and Andrews (10 Targets/26.3% Target Share) combined to earn 55.2% of Jackson’s total pass attempts.

Buffalo Bills

  • James Cook netted a total of negative (-)four rushing yards on five rushing attempts (35,7% Rush Share) becoming the only running back in the NFL to have at least five rushing attempts with negative yards this season.

  • Stefon Diggs (8 REC/11 TGT/121 YDS/1 TD) and Gabriel Davis (6 REC/8 TGT/100 YDS/1 TD) accounted for 35.0% of Josh Allen’s targets, 51.8% of the team’s receptions, 61.5% of the team’s receiving yards and both of Allen’s touchdown passes.

  • Josh Allen led the team in rushing attempts (4 Carries/28.5% Rush Share) and rushing yards (14) scoring all three of the team’s offensive touchdowns (2 Passing, 1 Rushing).

Carolina Panthers

  • Bryce Young secured the first QB1 outing of his young (pun intended) career this weekend, passing for 247 yards with three touchdowns while completing 25/41 attempts. Two costly interceptions stopped Young from reaching even greater heights, finishing the Week 5 as the QB9 overall.

  • Adam Thielen is on an absurd tear, rekindling his alpha WR1 days from before Justin Jefferson dawned the purple and gold of his former team. Thielen has seen eight or more targets in four consecutive contests (22.8% Target Share in 2023). The Panthers wideout has secured seven or more receptions in four straight games, surpassing 50 yards in each contest with a touchdown in three of four. Thielen caught 11 of 13 targets (31.7% Target Share) in Week 5 with 107 yards and his third touchdown of the season.

  • Chuba Hubbard (9 Carries/56.2% Rush Share) saw more rushing attempts than Miles Sanders (7 Carries/43.8% Rush Share) for the second consecutive week as the latter of the two teammates dealt with a nagging groin injury.

Chicago Bears

  • Justin Fields had a career outing in Week 4, completing 28/35 pass attempts for 335 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, Fields' one interception was a costly one as the Bears blew a 21-point lead to the Broncos, extending their regular season losing streak to 15 games.

  • Fields finally broke said losing streak in Week 5, putting together another sensational passing performance with 282 yards and four touchdowns.

  • Eight of Fields’ 11 passing touchdowns in 2023 have occurred in the last two games.

  • The Bears quarterback now joins one of just six other players in NFL history to have at least two consecutive games with four or more passing touchdowns, accompanied by legendary gunslingers like Peyton Manning (5 Games), Dan Mariona (4 Games), Tom Brady (4 Games), Patrick Mahomes (3 Games), Drew Brees (3 Games) and Russell Wilson (2 Games).

  • D.J. Moore became the first wide receiver in NFL history to have more than 200 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns while no other wide receiver on his team recorded a single catch.

  • Moore’s career outing in Week 5 yielded a WR2 overall finish (49.0 PPR Points) with eight catches on 10 targets (34.5% Target Share) for 230 yards (81.5% Receiving Yards Share) and three touchdowns.

  • Moore has accounted for 46.4% of the Bears receiving yards this season. He has accounted for 77.6% of the team’s total wide receiver yards this season. He has accounted for 90.6% of the team’s total wide receiver yards over the past two games and accounted for 100.0% of the team’s wide receiver yards in Week 5.

  • Justin Fields targeted other Bears wideouts a total of five times (17.2% Target Share), four of which went to Darnell Mooney (13.8% Target Share) with the remaining target falling to Equanimeous St. Brown (3.4% Target Share). Neither wideout recorded a reception.

  • Cole Kmet (5 REC/5 TGT/42 YDS/1 TD) and Robert Tonyan (2 REC/2 TGT/10 YDS) were the only other players on the roster to record a reception.

Cincinnati Bengals

  • Joe Burrow’s nagging calf injury appeared to be completely healed in the Bengals Week 5 dredging of the Cardinals. Burrow set season-highs in every single passing category, completing 36/46 attempts for 317 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

  • Ja’Marr Chase accounted for the majority of Burrow’s production as the wideout turned 19 targets (41.3% Target Share) into 15 receptions (41.6% Reception Share) for 192 yards (60.5% Receiving Yards Share) and all three of his team’s offensive touchdowns.

  • Trenton Irwin outproduced Tyler Boyd in every category, catching eight of ten targets (21.7% Target Share) for 60 yards while Boyd managed six receptions for 39 yards on seven targets (15.2% Target Share).

Cleveland Browns

  • *BYE WEEK*

Dallas Cowboys

  • The Cowboys' offense is one of dysfunction and inconsistencies. Dak Prescott threw three interceptions, attempting just 24 total passes with 14 completions despite the team trailing for the entirety of the contest.

  • The Cowboys' offense had 19 total rush attempts divided into six different players.

  • Tony Pollard (8 Carries), Rico Dowdle (5 Carries), Deuce Vaughn (3 Carries), Brandin Cooks (1 Carry), Dak Prescott (1 Carry), and Cooper Rush (1 Carry) all recorded rush attempts in the contest.

  • Three different pass-catchers (CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Tony Pollard) on the offense tied for a team-high five targets (19.2% Target Share).

  • Brandin Cooks (4 TGT/15.4% Target Share) and Jake Ferguson (3 TGT/11.5% Target Share) were the only other players on the offense to earn more than one target.

  • Kevonte Turpin hauled in his only target (3.8% Target Share) for a 26-yard touchdown grab–Prescott’s only touchdown pass of the day.

Denver Broncos

  • Jerry Jeudy led his team in targets (7 Targets/22.6% Target Share) for the first time this season, catching six passes for 50 yards.

  • Jaleel McLaughlin broke out in the absence of Javonte Williams, handling nine carries (60.0% Rush Share) for 68 yards with three receptions of four targets (12.9% Target Share) for 21 yards and one touchdown.

Detroit Lions

  • Sam LaPorta is providing the rarest of rookie tight end seasons for his managers, posting four top-10 positional outings in his first five games. LaPorta needed only four targets (14.3% Target Share) to mount a TE5 outing, catching three passes for 47 yards and two touchdowns.

Green Bay Packers

  • Jordan Love has been one of the most wildly erratic quarterbacks in the NFL this season, completing just 55.6% of his total pass attempts (90 CMP/162 ATT) with eight touchdowns and six interceptions, three of which came in Week 5 against the Raiders.

  • Romeo Doubs' hot streak ended, catching just one of four targets (13.3% Target Share) for four yards as seven other members of the Packers offense recorded more yards and more receptions than the second-year wideout.

  • Christian Watson and Luke Musgrave tied for a team-high seven targets (23.3% Target Share).

  • Watson needed just three receptions to secure 91 yards (50.0% Receiving Share), accounting for exactly half of Love’s passing output.

  • Musgrave’s six receptions made up 37.5% of Love’s completions as the team’s catch leader in Week 5.

  • A.J. Dillon handled a workhorse opportunity share, playing % of the team’s snaps () with 76 rushing yards (69.9% Rush Yards Share) on 20 carries (80.0% Rush Share).

Houston Texans

  • C.J. Stroud now owns the record for most consecutive pass attempts (177) by a rookie quarterback without an interception.

  • Stroud’s historic pace is nearly unheard of as the rookie quarterback has broken several first-year records already.

  • Only three quarterbacks in NFL history have started their first four games with more than 1,200 total passing yards. Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, C.J. Stroud.

  • The Texans rookie quarterback is also only the second quarterback in history to have no interceptions through his first five starts while averaging more than 30 pass attempts per game.

  • Stroud is currently on pace to break the rookie passing yards record by over 700 yards, averaging 292.2 passing yards per game.

Indianapolis Colts

  • Anthony Richardson will miss the next four games (at least) as he heads to Injured Reserve with an AC-joint sprain.

  • Josh Downs appears to be the favorite target of Gardner Minshew as the rookie wideout was just one target shy from leading the team in Week 3 when Minshew started against the Ravens.

  • In Week 5, with Minshew to close the game once again, Downs topped the Colts in receiving production with six receptions on six targets (23.1% Target Share) for 97 yards while once again falling one target shy of Michael Pittman Jr. for the team lead.

  • Downs played 47 snaps (71.0% Snap Share) compared to Pittman’s team-leading 66 snaps (100.0% Snap Share).

  • Pittman has led the Colts in targets in all five games this season. In Week 5, he caught five of seven targets (26.9% Target Share) for 52 yards.

  • Jonathan Taylor made his long-awaited return to the lineup but spent most of the game on the sidelines watching Zack Moss run rampant against the Titans' top-ranked rush defense.

  • Taylor saw six carries (20.7% Rush Share) for 18 yards catching his only target (3.8% Target Share) for 16 yards while Moss handled 23 rush attempts (29.3% Rush Share) for a whopping 165 yards and two touchdowns while catching both of his targets (3.8% Target Share) for an additional 30 receiving yards.

  • Moss out-snapped Taylor 53 (80.0% Snap Share) to 10 (15.0% Snap Share).

Jacksonville Jaguars

  • The Jaguars should officially relocate to London, winning all five of their last games in the NFL’s International Series.

  • Travis Etienne had his best outing of the 2023 season, rushing 26 times (89.7% Rush Share) for 136 yards (69.3% Rushing Yards Share) with two touchdowns while hauling in four of his five targets (13.5% Target Share) for 48 yards.

  • Calvin Ridley hauled in seven of eight targets (21.6% Target Share) for 122 yards, accounting for % of the team’s receiving production.

  • Christian Kirk tied Ridley with eight targets, catching six passes for 78 yards while leading the team in total snaps (75/85.0% Snap Share).

Kansas City Chiefs

  • The Chiefs are completely bereft of elite wide receiver talent, using an ever-changing committee to work through the rotation.

  • Nine different players received a target other than Travis Kelce. None of those players saw more than six targets despite Patrick Mahomes attempting 41 passes.

  • No wideout on the team played more than 65.0% of the offensive snaps.

  • Kelce led the team with 11 targets (26.8% Target Share) catching ten for 67 yards and one touchdown as the team’s receiving leader in every category despite missing most of the first half with a high-ankle sprain.

  • Kelce needed only 39 snaps (59.0% Snap Share) to be the team’s most productive player.

Las Vegas Raiders

  • Jakobi Meyers has been a sensational asset for the Raiders offense this season. Meyers continues to fly under the radar as one of the most reliable producers in fantasy, catching seven of his team-high ten targets (% Target Share) for 71 yards and one touchdown, surpassing Davante Adams as the team’s top wideout in Week 5.

  • Adams received the dreaded Jaire Alexander shadow treatment and was held to just four catches on four targets (% Target Share) for 45 yards.

  • Six different members of the Raiders offense recorded a rush attempt in Week 5 (Josh Jacobs, Tre Tucker, Jimmy Garoppolo, Ameer Abdulla, DeAndre Carter, and Jakobi Meyers).

  • Jacobs still averaged an absurd 68.9% Rush Share (20 Carries) for 69 yards (71.9% Rushing Yards Share) with one touchdown.

Los Angeles Chargers

  • *BYE WEEK*

Los Angeles Rams

  • Puka Nacua is, without exaggeration, off to the greatest start to a wide receiver’s career in NFL history. Nacua now owns the record for most receptions (46) and targets (63) by any wide receiver in their first five games.

  • The return of Cooper Kupp couldn’t even slow the rookie down. The duo acted in symphony as the team’s WR1(A) and WR1(B). Placing which label on whom is a pointless endeavor as both receivers produced top 12 positional finishes (Kupp: WR11, Nacua: WR12) in Week 5.

  • Kupp saw a team-high 12 targets (% Target Share), catching eight passes for 118 yards while Nacua was one target behind, earning 11 opportunities through the air (% Target Share) with seven receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown.

  • Kupp and Nacua combined for 85.1% of the team’s passing yards (189 YDS), and 71.4% of the team’s receptions (15 REC).

Miami Dolphins

  • Rookie running back De’Von Achane leads the NFL in Yards Per Carry with an absurd 12.1 rushing yards per attempt. He is merely 50 yards shy of Christian McCaffrey’s league-leading rushing total despite ranking 37th in carries (38) and 45th in opportunity share (35.9%). Achane currently has seven total touchdowns, ranked 3rd amongst all positional players despite the rookie missing the first game of the season and barely seeing the field in his second.

Minnesota Vikings

  • Justin Jefferson was placed on injured reserve following a devastating hamstring injury that left the struggling 1-4 Vikings without their most valuable player and Offensive Player of the Year candidate.

  • Jordan Addison and K.J. Osborn tied for a team-high nine targets (19.1% Target Share) in Jefferson’s stead while T.J. Hockenson earned eight targets (17.0% Target Share).

  • Addison led the team in receptions and receiving yards, hauling in six for 64.

  • Osborn and Hockenson walked away with five receptions apiece with the tight end outpacing his wideout teammate 51 to 49 in receiving yards.

New England Patriots

  • The Patriots' offensive snap shares and usage totals from Week 4 are heavily skewed as the team was blown out by the Cowboys, allowing several backups to increase their opportunity shares.

  • Repeat that exact sentence above for Week 5 and replace the Cowboys with the Saints as the Patriots were completely shut out in a 34-0 loss at home.

  • In Week 4 Mac Jones was benched for Bailey Zappe following two interceptions. Jones finished with 150 yards and no touchdowns, completing 12/21 attempts.

  • In Week 5 Jones was again benched for Zappe following two interceptions and one lost fumble. Jones finished with 110 yards and no touchdowns, completing 12/22 attempts

  • Zappe attempted nine pass attempts, completing four for 57 yards in Week 4.

  • In Week 5, Zappe attempted nine passes, completing three for 22 yards.

  • Spookily similar.

New Orleans Saints

  • On the opposite end of the matchup above, the Saints' opportunity shares in Week 5 are unlikely to yield continuous trends as the team blew the doors of an ill-prepared Patriots squad.

  • Week 5 yielded more of the same injury-riddled production from the Saints quarterback as Derek Carr completed 18/26 attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

  • In his first game back from suspension, Kamara set an embarrassing NFL record with the most receptions (13) and targets (14 Targets/35.9% Target Share) with the fewest yards (33).

  • In the following game, Kamara was slightly more efficient on much less usage, handling 22 rush attempts (64.7% Rush Share) for 80 yards and one touchdown, hauling in all three of his targets (11.5% Target Share) for 17 yards.

  • Kendre Miller saw extended work in garbage time and was highly productive with his limited opportunity share. The Saints rookie tallied 12 carries (35.3% Rush Share) for 37 yards while catching all four of his targets (15.4% Target Share) for 53 receiving yards.

  • Carr’s injury has drastically capped the ceiling of Chris Olave as the Saints struggle to push the ball deep. Olave played a team-high 79.0% of the offensive snaps () earning five targets (19.2% Target Share) but managed just two receptions for 12 yards. Fortunately, Olave found the endzone for the first time this season, supplementing some of his lackadaisical production.

  • Since Carr became injured, Olave has just three catches for 15 yards and one touchdown across two games.

New York Giants

  • Daniel Jones has been sacked 22 times through four games this season. 17 of those sacks have occurred in the last two contests as the team allowed 10 sacks to the Seahawks in Week 4 and seven to the Dolphins in Week 5.

  • Jones was forced to exit early after receiving an incredulous barrage of punishment.

  • Tyrod Taylor stepped in as the leading signal-caller, completing 9/12 passes for 86 yards.

  • Darren Waller led the team with 11 targets (34.3% Target Share), five more than Wan’Dale Robinson (6 Targets/18.7% Target Share) who held the second-highest total on the team despite leaving early with a knee injury.

  • Waller had a season-best game, collecting eight receptions (34.7% Reception Share) for 86 yards (41.9% Receiving Yards Share).

  • The Giants failed to score an offensive touchdown, marking the third time this season the team has mounted zero scoring drives in a game.

New York Jets

  • The Jets removed Breece Hall’s “pitch count” just in time for the generational superstar rusher to run wild all over a porous Broncos defense.

  • Hall handled carries (68.7% Rush Share), galloping his way to 177 yards (75.6% Rushing Share) and one touchdown which came on a 72-yard scamper to the end zone.

  • Dalvin Cook is dusty. The Broncos allowed at least 8.0 Yards Per Carry to every other member of the Jets offense to record a rush attempt (Hall, Wilson, Carter). Cook managed just 3.8 YPC.

Philadelphia Eagles

  • A.J. Brown is on a mission to completely remove DeVonta Smith from the conversation of who is the Eagles' true WR1.

  • Brown caught six of his eight targets (21.0% Target Share) for 127 yards while Smith managed just one reception for six yards on five targets (13.1% Target Share).

  • Dallas Goedert had a sensational outing while the Rams attempted to cover the Eagles' star tight end with a 310-lbs edge rusher.

  • Goedert paced the team with nine targets (23.6% Target Share) catching eight for 117 yards and one touchdown.

  • D’Andre Swift has established himself as the unquestioned RB1 for the Eagles. In Week 5 Swift saw 17 carries (70.8% RB Rush Share) for 70 yards while catching all six of his targets (15.7% Target share) for 38 yards.

  • Kenneth Gainwell, on the other hand, saw seven rush attempts for 17 yards with only two targets (5.3% Target Share) of which he caught one for seven yards.

  • Jalen Hurts led the team in rushing yards (72) with 15 carries (38.4% Rush Share) and one touchdown while throwing for 303 yards and another touchdown on 25/38 attempts.

Pittsburgh Steelers

  • George Pickens is one of only four wide receivers in the NFL who have been targeted at least 40 times and not dropped a single pass this season.

  • Pickens has established himself as a true Alpha wideout for the Steelers offense, finishing Week 5 with a team-high ten targets (31.2% Target Share), catching six for 130 yards (58.0%) and one touchdown while leading the team in snap percentage (58 Snaps/88.0% Snap Percentage).

San Francisco 49ers

  • Christian McCaffrey is an unstoppable fantasy football cheat code for week-winning production in every single outing. The 49ers star running back is the number one overall player in total fantasy scoring and PPG through four games this season. He is commanding an elite 17.5% target share (24 TGT), 72.3% rush share (99 RSH), and 83.9% snap share (265 Snaps).

  • Brandon Aiyuk reprised his rightful role as the 49ers WR1 after missing most of Week 2 and all of Week 3 with a shoulder injury. Aiyuk used the stepping stone of Deebo Samuel’s injury as leverage to lead all receivers in targets (7 TGT/28.0% Target Share).

  • George Kittle led the team in receiving yards (67), turning four targets (16.0% Target Share) into three receptions with three touchdowns.

Seattle Seahawks

  • *BYE WEEK*

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • *BYE WEEK*

Tennessee Titans

  • Tyjae Spears is slowly whittling away at Derrick Henry’s thrown as the “King” begins to show his age and decline in efficiency.

  • Spears once again saw a higher third-down snap percentage (31 Total Snaps/52.0% Snap Share) than Henry (37 Total Snaps/65.0% Snap Share) marking the third time in five games in which that has occurred.

  • Henry still outpaced the rookie as a rusher, handling 13 carries (65.0% Rush Share) for 43 yards but Spears was more efficient, taking seven carries (35.0% Rush Share) for 34 yards and one touchdown while catching four of five targets (14.3% Target Share) for 35 yards.

  • D’Andre Hopkins became just the third player in NFL history to record ten 100-yard games with ten (or more) different quarterbacks. Hopkins finished Week 5 with eight catches on 11 targets (32.3% Target Share) for 140 yards (53.0% Receiving Yards Share) leading his team as the only viable producer on offense.

Washington Commanders

  • Sam Howell attempted 55 consecutive designed pass plays as the Commanders desperately tried to claw their way back against an overpowered Bears squad.

  • Despite the increase in passing volume, Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin combined for just 10 targets (five each) for a 9.8% target share.

  • Logan Thomas led the team with targets (21.5%) catching nine balls for 77 yards and one touchdown.
