Clay's Corner: Week 6 DFS Plays

Week 5 was action-packed and we crushed it, nailing some huge picks for both cash games and GPPs. Let’s take a look back at the week that was.

Top Cash Plays:

Quarterbacks

Paying down for QB is the go-to strategy for Week 6 and there are plenty moderately priced options to choose from.

Jared Goff ($6,400)

Jared Goff has 19+ fantasy points in three of five games played to start the season. Goff was particularly impressive in Week 5, posting 236 passing yards and 3 TDs without his number one weapon in WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff also improved his rapport with rookie TE Sam LaPorta by hooking up with him for 2 TDs. This trend should continue as the Bucs rank as the 10th best matchup for opposing TEs per Broto’s True Matchup Rank (which you could be using for free right now on the FREE Broto app!).

Joe Burrow ($6,300)

Joe Burrow finally seems healthy-ish. He produced his first 20+ fantasy point game of the season and completed 78.3% of his passes in Week 5. Burrow’s increased completion percentage worked well with his volume (3rd in pass attempts) in Week 5 and I expect Burrow to be even better in Week 6 when they face the 6th best matchup for opposing QBs in the Seattle Seahawks.

Brock Purdy ($5,700)

The cheat code of the Week 6 cash slate is none other than Brock Purdy. Purdy has thrown 7 TDs in his last 3 games which correlates with his 20+ fantasy points output in that same timeframe. In fact here’s how impressive Purdy has been:

  • 2nd in completion percentage at 72.1%

  • 1st in True Throw Value (0.68)

  • 2nd in yards/att at 9.3

  • 9th in yards/gm at 254.2

  • 7th in passing TDs with 9

  • 6th in rushing TDs with 2

The matchup isn’t the best, however, the Browns can be beat and the matchup is exactly why he is so inexpensive. You can rely on Brock Purdy in cash to spend up at WR and RB this week.

Other options: Trevor Lawrence ($6,500) is as high as I’ll go in cash this week. Lawrence put up strong numbers against a tough Bills defense but he certainly carries the risk of a poor performance. Josh Dobbs ($5,200) finally had another bad performance, marred by 2 INTs and a fumble. Dobbs should be able to get back on track against a Rams defense void of talent.

Running Back

Travis Etienne ($7,100)

So much for RB Tank Bigsby taking on a significant role. Etienne dominated touches once again in Week 5 hitting season-highs in:

  • snap share- 83%

  • target share- 13% (2nd highest)

  • rushing share 89.7%

Etienne sits 14th among RBs in WOPR (weighted opportunity rating) and that number should continue to increase in Week 6. The Colts reside as the 11th best matchup for opposing RBs.

Alvin Kamara ($6,800)

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That sums up playing Alvin Kamara this week. He’s still the reigning champion in terms of WOPR at 33.6% and sporting an insane target share of 24.4%. All these numbers should improve in Week 6 since the Texans rank as the 5th best matchup for opposing RBs. It’s all systems go for Kamara.

Raheem Mostert ($6,400)

Let’s not overthink this here, the Miami RB spot has been crushing it all season long and with fellow RB De’Von Achane to IR, Mostert becomes the clear feature back, at least for this week. Mostert’s good fortunes continue with the benefit of playing the Panthers defense, who sit 4th in True Matchup Rank for opposing RBs. We all saw what RB David Montgomery did against the Panthers in Week 5. Fire up Mostert in cash for some savings.

Other considerations: Rachaad White ($5,500), Kyren Williams ($6,500).

Wide Receivers

High End

Tyreek Hill ($9,300), Cooper Kupp ($9,000), Ja’Marr Chase ($8,300), Davante Adams ($8,100)

All four of these players are top-9 in WOPR. They are all dominating in target share with all of them being over 30% in that category. They are priced as studs for a reason.

Adam Thielen ($5,900)

I was wrong about Adam Thielen this offseason. Since my best ball bags are light, I’m going to make up for it in DFS. Thielen has been lighting up the stat sheet: ranking 8th in targets, 4th in receptions and 5th in TDs among WRs. He’s also 27th in WOPR at 58.9% and sporting a strong 25.8% target share. There’s no one threatening or encroaching Thielen’s targets, so enjoy the savings and points.

Tight End

Sam LaPorta ($5,600)

As I mentioned earlier in the QB Jared Goff section, LaPorta has a great matchup this week. LaPorta is breaking the mold for rookie TEs. Heres how good LaPorta ranks among all NFL TEs:

  • 7th in targets

  • 4th in receptions

  • 3rd in True Target Value (TTaV)

  • 1st in receiving TDs

  • 2nd in PPOxTD (points per opportunity excluding TDs)

  • 9th in aDOT

  • 7th in target share- 19.5%

LaPorta is damn good and too cheap to not play in DFS in Week 6.

Update: Laporta is currently dealing with an injury and is questionable to play. If he is active, I am still firing him up.

Zach Ertz ($3,600)

Zach Ertz had a glass half-full, half-empty kind of performance in Week 5. The good news, Ertz finally hit pay dirt. The bad news, he only had 4 targets, second fewest on the season. Trust Ertz to continue earning targets and maintaining his 5th best WOPR among TEs.

D/ST

Atlanta Falcons ($3,600)

QB Sam Howell has been sacked 29 times this season, which leads the NFL. The Falcons defense has the 5th highest pressure rate in the NFL at 28.2%. This is the movable object vs the unstoppable force. After Week 6, Howell should continue to lead the NFL in sacks.

Favorite stacks:

1. Tua Tagovailoa + Raheem Mostert + Tyreek Hill with Adam Thielen bring back. Thielen is the only Carolina player I’d bring back in this game.

2. Joe Burrow + Ja’Marr Chase with DK Metcalf/Tyler Lockett/Kenneth Walker bring back. Seattle gives you plenty of options to use as a bring back to get unique if stacking this game. The Bengals also rank as the 2nd best matchup for opposing TEs so Noah Fant does have some appeal.

3. Brock Purdy + CMC + Deebo Samuel/Brandon Aiyuk/George Kittle with no bring back. The Browns will be without QB Deshaun Watson (shoulder injury, DNP Wednesday), so no reason to force a bring back.

4. Matthew Stafford + Kyren Williams + Puka Nacua/Cooper Kupp with Marquise Brown/Michael Wilson/Zach Ertz bring back. This game stacks easily and has plenty of strong pieces to get unique.

GPP Plays:

Quarterbacks High End

Justin Fields ($7,300)

Fields is back to his helter-skelter ways. After three pathetic games in Weeks 1-3, Fields busted out for a combined 64 fantasy points over his last two games. Fields now ranks 2nd in True Throw Value (TTV), 2nd in passing TDs, 3rd in rushing attempts and 4th in rushing yards. Since Fields started rushing, his numbers have come up drastically and he should have plenty of room to run against a broken Vikings team.

I also like my cash QBs as GPP options for Week 6.

Running Back

Josh Jacobs ($7,000)

Jacobs got off to a slow start with under 50 rushing yards and 3 targets in Week 1. Since then he has started heating up with no less than 5 targets and 50+ rushing yards the past three weeks and the Patriots have lost by a combined 69 points the last two weeks combined. Jacobs also ranks 2nd in WOPR among RBs at 30.6%. Jacobs is a boom-bust GPP play for Week 6.

Alexander Mattison ($5,600)

This play is not for the faint of heart as this is 100% a matchup play. Mattison has still maintained the lion’s share of work since Cam Akers joined the fray with 51 snaps to Akers’ 29 and a rushing share of 57.1% vs 35.7%. According to Broto’s True Matchup Rank, the Bears are the best matchup for opposing RBs. With WR Justin Jefferson on IR, the Vikings may lean on the running game.

Wide Receivers

Jordan Addison ($5,700)

Addison, in theory, should get more work with the aforementioned Justin Jefferson on IR. So far this season, Addison has been a boom-or-bust option. He had a season-high 9 targets against the Chiefs and should continue to get more volume. Addison makes for an intriguing GPP play in Week 6.

Calvin Ridley ($6,700)

Is the Jaguars offense back after a big second half against the Bills in London? Ridley sits at 30th in WOPR among WRs and has a strong air yards share of 36.4%. With RB Travis Etienne expected to be a popular play, Ridley should have low-rostership. Ridley has only had 1 game with less than 7 targets, against the Colts, who rank as the 8th best matchup for opposing WRs. Ridley should be targeted early and often in this one, especially with Zay Jones out.

Tight Ends

I am comfortable using my cash TEs recommendations for GPPs but there is one higher priced option that I am interested in.

TE TJ Hockenson ($6,600)

Hockenson has been getting targeted and ranks 9th in WOPR among TEs. I expect he’ll see more volume with WR Justin Jefferson out. Hockenson ranks 3rd in redzone targets among TEs which should work well with the Bears ranking as the 11th best matchup for TEs. I also expect most to pay down for TEs this week so Hockenson should have low-rostership.
