Clay's Corner: DFS Plays for Week 2

Welcome to the Clay’s DFS Plays for Week 2! Each week we’ll identify DFS plays and stacks to try to help you “bink” that GPP or smash in cash games! Most of the chalk hit in Week 1, so Week 2 provides an opportunity to be contrarian. On a personal note, I took down my first small field GPP led by the Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown connection, one of my favorite stacks in Week 1. Let the #printfest begin for Week 2!

Games to target:

1. CIN @ DAL - 43.5 O/U

Implied totals: CIN 25.25; DAL 18.5

2. ATL @ LAR – 47.5 O/U

Implied totals: ATL 18.5; LAR 29

3. IND @ JAX - 46.5 O/U

Implied totals: IND 25.25; JAX 21.25

4. WAS @ DET

Implied totals: WAS 23.25; DET 25.25

Top Cash Plays:

Quarterback

Fox 19

Joe Burrow ($6,600)

After a brutal loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Joe “Cool” Burrow is an easy selection in cash this week (and some GPPs). The Dallas Cowboys defense isn’t even close to the Steelers and now with Dak Prescott out for 6-8 weeks, it could be a total collapse.

Derek Carr ($6,200)

Derek Carr is also a nice value this week and gets the defense that just allowed Patrick Mahomes to throw 5 TDs against them in the Arizona Cardinals.

Carson Wentz ($5,800)

If you really want to stretch your cash budget, Carson Wentz is a solid option. The Detroit Lions struggled to contain any part of the Philadelphia Eagles offense in Week 1, so an opportunity exists for Wentz to put up strong numbers on the heals of a Top-6 finish.

Running Back

Cleveland Browns

Kareem Hunt ($6,600)

I don’t understand why the Browns won’t use Nick Chubb at the goal line but it’s a trend that’s going on its second season and its time to adjust. Hunt had an 11.8% target share and a .354 WOPR last week and they get lowly Jets. Lock and load Hunt into that RB slot.

Saquon Barkley ($7300)

Would you like to guess who Hunt torched last week? If you guessed the Carolina Panthers then you are correct. Fantasy teams need running backs that run and catch passes and Barkley fits that bill. He had 7 targets and a 78.3% rushing share last week. Look for more of the same this week.

D’Andre Swift $7,000

We knew Swift could catch passes but now he’s showing out in the run game. Swift doubled Jamaal Williams’ snap share (66.7 to 33.3) in Week 1 and I expect Swift to continue to dominate. James Robinson and Travis Etienne combined for 113 rushing yards last week and Swift has a higher ceiling than those two RBs. Expect another big week.

Wide Receivers

Sports Illustrated

Davante Adams ($8,600)

Davante Adams started his new season with the Raiders in style. He commanded a whopping 17 targets, good for a 45.9% target share. I think we all had concerns about an older WR switching teams but Derek Carr is distributing and Adams is finishing.

Christian Kirk ($5,700)

Christian Kirk also smashed in his debut with Jacksonville. He accumulated seven receptions on 12 targets for 117 yards. Jacksonville paid the man and he’s going to get all the passes he can handle. Zay Jones had 9 targets but there is no reason to fret, the shaky Jacksonville defense will give the offense plenty of opportunities.

Tight End

Kyle Pitts ($5,400)

CBS Sports

Pitts tied for a team-high in targets with seven last week. His catch and yardage totals left a lot to be desired last week but he now gets a matchup with the LA Rams who project to score 29 points, meaning the Falcons will need to pass. Pitts will have to get back on track in Week 2 if Atlanta wants to keep up with the Rams.

D/ST

Cleveland Browns ($3,700)

My expensive New Orleans recommendation flopped last week, so I’m going back to home favorites and Cleveland fits the bill. Myles Garrett and crew are going to pound whoever the Jets QB is to a pulp. The Jets are without RT Machi Beckton and LT Duane Brown is on IR. Hopefully the Jets will have the ice baths ready post-game.

Cincinnati Bengals $2,200

I’ve never tried ASMR but I do get a tingling feeling when I hear a defense is facing Cooper Rush. In 5 games last season, Rush accumulated 30 completions on 47 attempts and a 63.8% completion percentage along with 3 TDs and one INT. The Bengals defense is on the prowl and the Cowboys are badly injured prey.

Favorite stacks:

1. Joe Burrow + Ja’Marr Chase (wouldn’t recommend a bring-back from DAL).

2. Matthew Stafford + Cooper Kupp

3. Kareem Hunt + Cleveland D/ST

4. Derek Carr + Davante Adams + Darren Waller

GPP Plays:

QB Trey Lance ($5,700)

Last week was ugly but it makes sense that Lance had a bad game being unable to run through the monsoon weather at Soldier Field in Chicago. Now, Lance gets a home game against a Seattle Seahawks team riding high on their victory over Russell Wilson, courtesy of Nathaniel Hackett. Now is the time for Lance–the starter seat is heating up with Jimmy G breathing down his neck. I’m willing to throw Lance in some GPPs and hope for a bouce-back blowup game.

2. RB Joe Mixon ($7,200)

I know what you’re thinking, “really Clay, Joe Mixon again?” Yes, and I’m not sorry about it. With Dallas being exploitable, I anticipate high rostership for the Bengals passing attack and Mixon provides direct leverage against Burrow and Chase. Mixon is also one of the few “bell-cow” backs. He had 29 carries (96.4% rushing share) and 9 targets for a WOPR of 0.773. Dallas just had Tampa Bay cram Leonard Fournette down their throats and Mixon gets his turn this week.

3. RB Antonio Gibson ($6,200)

CBS Sports

Carson Wentz and Jahan Dotson stole the show but Antonio Gibson was doing the dirty work in Week 1. Gibson had 14 carries and 8 targets last week and I wouldn’t expect a change. Especially since the Washington Commanders get to face a team that gave up four rushing TDs to four different players last week, the Detroit Lions. Until Brian Robinson returns, Gibson will produce in his absence.

4. WR Jerry Jeudy ($5,600)

Oh how things change. Courtland Sutton was supposed to be the WR that Russell Wilson favored, yet, on Monday night in Week 1, it was the former Alabama first-round pick Jerry Jeudy who scored the most points. Things could certainly swing back in favor of Sutton but we want explosive plays for GPPs, not stat sheet stuffers, and Juedy fits the bill. It also helps that the Broncos get the Houston Texans who gave up 121 receiving yards and a TD to Michael Pittman Jr. last week.

5. WR Curtis Samuel ($4,600)

Let’s start calling Curtis Samuel “Deebo-lite.” Finally healthy, Samuel put on a show last week, garnering 11 targets and four carries and a TD against Jacksonville. The Detroit Lions won’t offer much resistance, so expect another nice week from Samuel.

6. TE Hayden Hurst ($3,600)

TE is awful this week. However, Hurst provides some salary relief with production. He had 8 targets last week, although most of that was with Tee Higgins out. Hurst remains a strong option and is a nice pivot off if Ja’Marr Chase if he is chalky.

7. TE Pat Freiermuth ($4,400)

Pat Freiermuth quietly accumulated 10 targets last week. As always, volume is king at TE. No need to worry about the “vaunted” New England defense. The Miami Dolphins shredded them for 300 yards last week.

Lone Ranger (sub $5,000 player that can score over 10 fantasy points)

USA Today

1. Curtis Samuel ($4,600)

He’s finally over the groin issue (hopefully) and Scott Turner couldn’t be happier. There’s plenty of room for Samuel in this offense especially if he’s going to be discount Deebo. He should smash the 10 point threshold this week against Detroit.

2. Zay Jones ($4,300)

That’s right I’m doubling down this week. Give me some Zay Jones in an expected up-tempo game against the Colts. Jones finished with six receptions for 65 yards last week and was second on the team in targets and WR snaps.

Final thoughts:

  1. Anything involving the Denver Broncos this week should be considered contrarian. After Nathaniel Hackett’s disgraceful coaching, no one is going to want to touch the Broncos with a 10-foot pole.

  2. I don’t love the games this week and hence will be playing lower volume. If you don’t feel comfortable with a slate, it’s ok to pass or just play showdown lineups.
