Week 5 Devy Dives: College Players to Watch

Welcome to The BRoto “Devy Dives” series, where once a week we take a look at some of the biggest names and breakouts in College Football. Throughout this series, we will take an in-depth look at five players who either shone bright or failed to make an impact in the weekly slate of games. With the Devy and Dynasty Fantasy Football communities becoming more and more popular, this short read is your one-stop-shop for weekly updates on some players you need to keep your eye on!

Miyan Williams, RB, Ohio State (Junior)

Land-Grant Holy Land

Did you expect anyone else to be atop this week’s Devy Dives list? With star back TreVeyon Henderson held out for the Buckeye’s Week Five clash with then 3-1 Rutgers, Miyan Williams took his talents into the spotlight for the first time as a true workhorse and he isn’t looking back now. After filling a supporting role for Henderson a week earlier, taking 11 carries for 101 yards and a pair of scores, Williams exploded this weekend and pushed his name up draft boards.

What we witnessed from the running back against Rutgers was nothing less than sensational, as the star of the week tallied 21 carries for 189 yards and a whopping five touchdowns in the game. Williams was able to prove himself both in short yardage and in the open field, with four touchdowns coming from inside the two-yard line and his fifth being a 70-yard explosion in the third quarter to immediately answer a Rutgers field goal. While a healthy Henderson is still the best back on the roster, Williams has opened some eyes recently and has the skills to make it in the NFL.

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama (Junior)

As it turns out, Georgia Tech-transfer Jahmyr Gibbs is more than just a pass-catching running back. Following three straight weeks of only scoring touchdowns through the air, Gibbs flipped a switch and showcased his dominant rushing abilities in a 49-26 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. Scoring twice in the fourth quarter to salt the game away, Gibbs demonstrated just how electric he can be even if given just a handful of touches.

Scoring first on a 72-yarder in the early stages of the fourth, Gibbs was able to finally break free after being held to 59 yards on his first 15 carries. Two possessions later, Gibbs again sprung loose for a 76-yard house call, putting the game firmly out of reach for Arkansas and ending his day with 206 yards on 18 carries. While it is true that most of his production came on those two runs alone, Gibbs aforementioned skills in the receiving department will help his case when it comes to finding a spot in the NFL.

Dante Cephas, WR, Kent State (Senior)

Pittsburgh-Post-Gazette

Struggling early in the season, Kent State needed someone they could rely on to right the ship against the Ohio Bobcats. Senior receiver Dante Cephas took that role and ran with it. Pairing with running back Marquez Cooper, who had a mind-blowing 40 carries on the game which he took for 240 yards and a pair of scores, Cephas kept the air attack alive and the Ohio defense guessing.

With fellow receiver Devontez Walker being the only other viable option in the passing game, hauling in six passes of his own for 107 yards, Cephas took over for the Golden Flashes. Ohio was simply unable to stop the Senior on his way to 13 catches and 246 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17 and help force overtime, with Kent State eventually prevailing 31-24. He is a name to monitor moving forward, though he’s not a viable add just yet until he can prove that this game wasn’t a fluke.

Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College (Senior)

How could we not mention the player who may have just made the catch of the year this past week? In a slugfest against the Louisville Cardinals in Week 5, the Boston College Senior took control, accounting for half of his teams receiving output and two of the three passing scores, including his absolute mossing of Louisville safety Josh Minkins resulting in a walk-in 57-yard score in the second quarter despite being four inches shorter than the DB.

That touchdown, however, was not the only thing success that he found on the day. The Senior was also able to bring in another four catches, bringing his game total to five receptions and 151 yards with the aforementioned touchdown. On the year so far, Flowers has accounted for 481 yards and five touchdowns on 34 receptions, displaying his speed and elusiveness that has him shooting up draft boards everywhere heading for the 2023 NFL draft.

Max Duggan, QB, TCU (Senior)

Frogs O’ War

Facing a struggling Oklahoma lineup in Week 5, Max Duggan and the TCU Horned Frogs went to town in route to their fourth win of the season and 17th overall ranking in the most recent AP Poll. The game wasn’t close, with TCU throttling the Sooners team that opened the season with expectations of being one of the top teams in all of college football. If they weren’t already proven wrong leading into Week 5, Duggan made sure to finish them off.

Since taking over the TCU offense in Week 2, Duggan has accounted for 970 yards and 11 touchdowns on 68-of-91 passing without an interception. Perhaps more impressive, though, was the rushing performance he displayed over the weekend, overshadowing his 23-of-33, 302-yard, 3-touchdown performance by taking five carries for 116 yards and another two scores. While he has already proven himself to be extremely accurate, this rushing talent is what could propel him towards being a sleeper prospect for the 2023 NFL draft.
